Power Whitening
Power Whitening is among the most popular cosmetic dentistry procedures. It is a completely safe and low-cost procedure, which contributes to changing the color of the teeth, thereby significantly improving its aesthetic appearance. The whitening can concern a live or denervated tooth, while the whitening process can be performed by the patient at home, by the dentist in the office or a combination of the two above.
When do we Whitening?
When the teeth are dark, yellow, gray :
– Congenitally
– from the passage of time
– from the use of medicine
– from the use of coffee, soft drinks, red wine
– from cigarette use
- In-office whitening
In-office whitening lasts from 30 to 90 min and will require 1 to 3 sessions depending on the type of discoloration and how white you want your teeth to be. First a special protective gel is placed on the gums and then the whitening agent. Whitening agents can be self-activated or activated by heat or special frequency light (laser, led, plasma). Because the concentrations of whitening agents used in the dental office are higher than those used for at-home whitening, the results are faster and more spectacular.
- Whitening at home
For at-home whitening, the dentist takes impressions of the teeth to make the trays into which the whitening agent will be placed. The patient fills each splint with the whitening gel given to him by the dentist and wears it for 30 to 60 minutes daily. The desired result usually occurs in 1 or 2 weeks. However, the patient should continue to wear the splint for 4 weeks.
For faster and long-term more stable results, the combination of whitening at home and in the dental office is recommended.
- Caution – Contraindications and Complications
If there are teeth that have old or worn fillings, have suffered fractures or their root has been exposed, a little or a lot of sensitivity may appear. Old fillings should be removed at the doctor’s discretion before whitening and cleaning and polishing so that the teeth and gums are healthy. Uncontrolled whitening can be dangerous to your oral health. The sensitivity that can occur even in a healthy mouth should be under the control of the dentist and can subside immediately after the whitening procedure with proper care. A transient slight irritation of the gums is also likely to occur. During pregnancy bleaching is contraindicated as a precaution, as the effect of bleaching agents on the development of the fetus is not yet known. In general, however, it is a fairly safe and painless procedure.
- Maintaining the result
From the moment the patient enters the whitening process, he must know that the result is not permanent. The period of time in which the original shade of the teeth can return is 2-3 years. Smoking, tea play an important role. red wine, coffee, cola-type soft drinks.
Consequently, maintaining the effect can be ensured with a booster dose at the doctor’s office once every 2 years or by reusing the splint every 6 months for 5-6 days.
